Manual Lymphatic Drainage

Manual Lymphatic Drainage

This non-invasive therapy is very gentle and slow. It is performed with the hands without the use of creams or oils. It primarily works on the lymphatic system and can be applied to various body areas such as the face, arms, legs, feet, abdomen, back, and flanks.

Main Indications

Manual lymphatic drainage helps cleanse and detoxify the body, improve the immune system, reduce “congestions” (sinusitis, rhinitis, headaches, tinnitus…), fluid retention, swelling, and improve the skin’s appearance.

In pre- and post-operative contexts, the drainage helps reduce edema and bruising faster, as well as any skin irregularities resulting from healing.

How It Works

Manual lymphatic drainage is a very gentle, rhythmic, and precise massage, mainly performed through gliding movements in specific directions toward the lymph nodes. The lymph nodes are lightly and repeatedly pressed to filter and “clean” fluids/lymph faster. This process allows the elimination of toxins, impurities, and excess fluids from the body.

Side Effects

There are no reported side effects.

Efficacy

Results are visible between the 2nd and 3rd session.

How Many Sessions Are Needed?

Sessions can be performed daily or once a week, depending on each case and its progress.

Each session lasts approximately 45 to 60 minutes. It is recommended to perform around 8 to 10 sessions. In surgical cases, lymphatic drainage should be performed within the first 48 hours.

Contraindications

Manual lymphatic drainage is contraindicated in the following situations: first trimester of pregnancy, high-risk pregnancy, patients with high/uncontrolled blood pressure, or with cardiac or renal disorders.
