Orthodontics – Braces
WHAT IS ORTHODONTICS?
Orthodontics is a specialty of dentistry responsible for the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of misaligned teeth and jaws.
This specialty involves the design, application, and control of corrective appliances to align the teeth, lips, and arches to achieve appropriate alignment for facial balance.
The duration of each treatment depends on the nature of the case, the person’s age, and the existing bone and dental situation.
Anyone can undergo orthodontic treatment to achieve a more beautiful and healthy smile, from children to adults, regardless of age.
In addition to aesthetic benefits, orthodontic treatments can prevent gum problems, dental pain, and facial discomfort.
The dentist, who specializes in orthodontics, should determine the appropriate type of treatment for each patient after conducting a detailed study.
METAL SELF-LIGATING BRACKET
In a self-ligating bracket, the archwire (orthodontic wire) that passes through each bracket does not require elastic ligatures (“rubber bands”).
Another advantage of this type of bracket is oral hygiene. The absence of elastic ligatures helps prevent the accumulation of food debris, reducing the likelihood of plaque and cavities.
Studies indicate that orthodontic treatment with the self-ligating system can be faster (up to 7 months faster compared to conventional orthodontic brackets), depending on the patient’s pathology. This advantage is due to the lower friction between brackets and arch, which allows for faster and safer tooth movement.
ESTHETIC SELF-LIGATING BRACKET
Similar to the functions of the metal self-ligating bracket, these brackets are made of ceramic (a translucent material on the front of the appliance).
LINGUAL ORTHODONTIC BRACKET
Lingual orthodontics is a technique where the brackets are placed on the lingual side of the teeth, making it the only truly invisible orthodontic treatment.
This treatment is suitable for anyone who prefers to “straighten their teeth” without others noticing.
For individuals with significant public exposure or athletes, for example, it is the treatment of choice, as it avoids injuries to the lips and cheeks, since there is no contact with the appliance.
ALIGNERS / CLEAR TRAYS (INVISALIGN®)
Another alternative to lingual orthodontics is clear aligners or trays, which are nearly imperceptible and removable, allowing for normal eating and hygiene.
This technique allows for effective and aesthetic treatment in suitable cases.
Several aligners are used in a specific order and for predetermined periods of time.
