Otoplasty is a surgery that allows the correction of large ears or protruding ears, also called winged ears or abducted ears. In the case of children, extra psychological support is needed to ensure a good final result.
Indications (When we perform an Otoplasty)
It should be done before the child starts school to avoid the psychological effects caused by other children. However, it can and should also be performed on adults.
How is Otoplasty surgery performed?
We make an incision on the back of the ear, detach part of the skin, and expose the cartilage; the cartilage is then cut or folded to bend the auricle so that it is closer to the patient’s head. In some cases, part of the ear’s concha has to be removed.
How is the anesthesia?
The surgical intervention can be performed under local or general anesthesia. At Clínica Luso Española, we always perform it on an outpatient basis, and almost all adult patients choose local anesthesia.
Complications
As with all surgical interventions, there are risks that must be considered. The most common complication is bruising (hematoma), although this is still rare. Sometimes reoperation may be necessary because the cartilage has memory and may need to be folded again.
Post-operative care
Otoplasty is a minimally painful surgery. We always prescribe mild painkillers. After the surgery, a compression band must be worn for the first few weeks.
Expectations
Each patient should talk with the surgeon to understand the real possibilities of the surgery and have realistic expectations.
Will I have any scars?
The incisions are made behind the ear, so they are not visible.
What are the post-operative care instructions?
The patient should wear a band for a month and then only at night for two months. Depending on the deformity being corrected, this time may be reduced.
When can I return to normal activities?
Most patients can return to school or work within five days, but it is advised to avoid excessive exercise for three weeks. Some patients may need a few more days, while others may need fewer days.
