Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy is an in-office treatment that involves injecting a solution into the vein to cause atrophy and collapse of the vessel.

Commonly referred to as “vein drying,” it is mainly performed for cosmetic purposes but is also used to treat venous disease.

WHICH VEINS CAN BE TREATED WITH SCLEROTHERAPY?

It is especially used to treat smaller varicose veins and some larger trunk veins.

HOW MANY SESSIONS ARE NECESSARY?

It depends on the patient, but usually between 2 to 4 sessions are required.

Recovery time and care

After sclerotherapy sessions, normal life can be resumed, and the patient can return to work immediately.

It is very important that the patient follows the post-sclerotherapy instructions from the specialist, which may vary depending on the technique used and the size of the treated vein.

The doctor will inform when the patient can return to physical activity, sun exposure, and the use of compression stockings, creams, or necessary medications.

Expected side effects

  • Burning sensation, mild itching at the site, lasting 12-24 hours;
  • Small bruises, lasting 3-15 days.

Undesirable side effects

  • Local hyperpigmentation (rare).

DOES IT REPLACE SURGERY?

Rarely. When surgical intervention is required, it should be performed regardless of sclerotherapy. Sclerotherapy improves the external appearance, while surgery addresses the root of the problem.
