Sclerotherapy
Sclerotherapy is an in-office treatment that involves injecting a solution into the vein to induce atrophy and collapse of the vessel.
Commonly referred to as “drying,” it is primarily performed for aesthetic purposes, but it is also used to treat the underlying condition.
Which Varicose Veins Can Be Treated with Sclerotherapy?
Sclerotherapy is particularly effective for treating finer varicose veins and some trunk varicose veins.
How Many Sessions Are Necessary?
The number of sessions depends on the patient type, but typically 2 to 4 sessions are required.
What is the Recovery Time and Care Required?
After sclerotherapy sessions, patients can return to their normal activities, including work, immediately.
It is crucial for patients to follow the post-sclerotherapy guidelines provided by the specialist, as these may vary depending on the technique used and the size of the treated vein.
The doctor will inform the patient when they can resume physical activities, the duration to avoid sun exposure, the use of compression stockings, and any necessary creams or medications.
Expected Side Effects
- Burning sensation and mild itching at the injection site, lasting 12-24 hours;
- Small bruises that may last for 3-15 days.
Undesirable Side Effects
- Local hyperpigmentation (rare).
Does It Replace Surgery?
This rarely happens. When surgical intervention is indicated, it should be performed regardless of whether sclerotherapy is done. Sclerotherapy improves the external appearance, while surgery addresses the root of the problem.
